He flirts with and asks seemingly every woman he encounters out in a laid-back yet 'elaborate' fashion. If turned down, hardly dissuaded, he'll simply ask the next, nearby lady. Polite and playful, he never seems to mean any harm in his antics, instead simply taking a carefree approach to most everything, and shrugging the 'unimportant' things off. For the most part his flirtations seem innocent enough; he's the type of guy who'd give the nice old lady a sweet compliment as he helped her across the street. Still, that doesn't mean a streak of youthful mischief isn't present in him. Ryoji also seems to highly dislike hurting others, which could be seen as a reason for all of his friendlieness and flirtings; a way of making everyone happy. When he learns that he is Death, he clearly displays a deep regret, stating he 'was never meant to be', and apologizing multiple times to the protagonists. Upon his self-realization, Ryoji, though he tries to remain as the same, smiling boy, understandably changes. Though he cares immensely, even still, for the happiness of others, going so far as to offer his 'life' to give them a period of 'ignorant bliss', he accepts what he knows beyond any shadow of a doubt to be the fate of the world, and his inevitable role in it. In the end, it only makes sense that Death would be a fatalist. Though he explains and repeats just what a fearsome fate his mere presence foretells, his concern for himself seems nearly non-existant, instead focused on the despair his friend would be faced with at such an inevitable fate. Despite holding firmly to what he is destined to do, he is a caring, adaptable, and accepting individual, if somewhat passive, remaining hopeful for those around him. CHARACTER TIME PERIOD: Post-Seal/Nyx Battle, Ryoji realizes who and what he was, and is deeply confused by why he's back. His memories are of Minato foremostly, but he would sense some strange and deep familiarity with Minako. HISTORY: Ryoji first appears as a flirtatious and friendly transfer student at Gekkoudan High School late in the school year, notably becoming fast friends with Junpei, a main member of SEES. He is introduced as having been overseas due to his parents work and unaware of customs. Though mostly dismissed, he is quickly and constantly labeled by Aigis as 'not good' and 'dangerous', which bewilders both he and SEES, until a month after his arrival when Aigis remembers who and what Ryoji really is, and confronts him alone on the Moonlit Bridge. Ten years prior to this meeting, they had clashed on the bridge, Ryoji, however, in the broken form of Death, the appriser and harbinger of The Fall, who will summon Nyx to the world in order to fulfill the wishes of mankind when they no longer have the desire to live. Unable to defeat Death, Aigis sealed it instead within a young boy (the Protagonist, hereafter referred to as 'Minato'), who grew up carrying Death inside him. Because of this, Death was able to obtain human form, first as the young, phantom-like child, Pharos, who only appeared to the Minato to speak cryptically of an 'end' approaching, and to warn him of impending threats. These threats, in particular, were the twelve other pieces of Death that had been scattered from it, and that, upon their 'defeat', had returned to it. After the twelfth, Pharos was able to remember what he had forgotten, and bid Minato farewell, stating he would treasure the bond and conversations they had. It was only a month after this that Ryoji himself had appeared. With this regained understanding, Ryoji regretfully informed SEES that his mere existance denies any other fate apart from The Fall. However, because of his time within Minato, he was able to gain a human form, and talk, laugh, and cry with them all. Because of this, he could give them a choice; to kill him and erase all of their memories of the Dark Hour and Shadows to live out their remaining, brief time before The Fall in peace without fear of their coming annihilation. He claims that he will disappear into the Dark Hour anyway, and gives them until the end of the year to make their decision, then disappearing. When SEES ultimately refuses to kill him and instead face Nyx, Ryoji attempts to persuade Minato alone to kill him and spare his friends their suffering. He even reveals his true form, similar to the summonable Persona, Thanatos, in the hopes of proving himself of not even being human. His offer is still refused though, and reluctantly Ryoji proceeds to tell them how to attempt to combat Nyx, though he still believes it is ultimately impossible, and afterwards, disappears again for the final remaining month before The Fall. On the fated day, they are met by the Nyx Avatar, a dark creature who bears an uncanny resemblance to Ryoji, and speaks with his voice, but with a measure of indifference, stating he was 'called that [Ryoji] for a time', and that he 'did not mind it'. Now, however, he and Nyx are one in the same, and he again warns SEES against fighting him. Throughout their battle Nyx Avatar gives deep and profound words of wisdom related to the thirteen arcana, and is seemingly defeated, only to lament their sad inevitable fates. Nyx's true form reveals itself, and it is only through the protagonists life-giving sacrifice and use of the ultimate power that he is able to seal humanity's desire for death from Nyx. After the battle, Ryoji's voice reveals to the remaining members of SEES that he will slumber now, and though he speaks with his previous, kind and friendly voice, he also adds that 'they will meet again'. Now, Ryoji's memories are somewhat skewed, but at the same time, he has a relatively good idea of whats going on, or, in the very least, that something is amiss. He remembers now, just who and what he is, happy with at least that much having forgotten it so many times before. This time, he hopes, he can at least make a difference that won't destroy mankind...
