Of limber build, he appears physically frail albeit stoic, as a tree that bends under the will of the winds but never quite snaps. Looking a touch anemic, his pale complexion denotes sickliness or at least a certain proclivity for being bed-ridden, in spite of these things he's healthy. He has a definite air of seriousness about him, or at least the look of someone who remains deeply focused on the task at hand. His face can be considered one of slight annoyance at everything that occurs about him, with narrowed almond-shaped eyes of honey brown; usually hidden behind thick-rimmed glasses that stand atop a small turn-up nose, the former which turn protrude from a matted mess of disheveled black hair. Ryou is not someone who attracts others to him, though he prefers it that way; whatever perception that others have of him is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. Ryou dresses simply, wearing short-sleeved buttoned shirts and fitted slacks along with sneakers; he rarely strays from this formulaic manner of dress, only adding in a coat when the weather demands it, and a scarf in the most dire of climes. He favors the colors navy blue, gray and gun-metal, with black coming in as a close third, Other accoutrements of his are his e'er inseparable satchel, usually filled with an assortment of books he happens to be perusing at the time, as well as a notebook and other writing supplies. Other articles of note are a string of prayer beads he keeps wrapped over his wrist, they're a series of burnt bodhi seeds each bearing a different prana vayu, bound at the end by a single, polished carnelian, it bears the air-apparent kosha within it, finally it's topped off by a colored knot of frayed fibres in red and orange. The prayer beads are a gift to Ryou from his grandfather, a mystic.[/style] [atrb=cellPadding,5,true][atrb=style, background: #777777; border-radius:0px 0px 15px 0px; -moz-border-radius:0px 0px 15px 0px;][style= color: #000000; width: 385px; height: 124px; overflow-y:scroll;] POSITIVES: ↑ Introspective to a fault ↑ Loyal ↑ Level-headed ↑ Quick on his feet ↑ Flexible (in both senses of the word) NEGATIVES: ↓ Blunt, dry-witted, deadpan, and a bit of a snarker ↓ Is a huge cynic ↓ He tries to follow the path of least resistance toward something, rather than be challenged ↓ He has no trust for others ↓ Can be considered a conformist ↓ Selfish OVERALL PERSONALITY: Reserved would best describe someone a fair bit more weathered by the travails of life, and while Ryou endeavors so, he's still a fair-ways away from getting there. What he is however is a person who recognizes who he is, and acknowledges his flaws; a better person may take that as a chance to better himself, or perhaps undertake some personal quest of self-realization, this is not the case for Ryou who ambles about in a mediate level of commodity over who he is. Rather than work on removing these flaws from his character, he heightens them in a sort of self-depreciation that can only be achieved by someone who's mastered cynicism; though he's but 15, he's about 30 ahead in cynicism. Dour doesn't become him, though he can appear to be so to outsiders, though that'd also mean he's bitter, curmudgeonly and irritable. However people perceive Ryou is of no concern to him, as the false preconceived notions don't figure into the grand scheme of things. He's sure of his truth and it's the only that truly matters. However no matter how distant he places himself, he seems proclive to get tangled up in someone else's messes, even if forced to face matters he'll hold off on doing anything until it becomes obvious to him that the situation will not be resolved by itself. Thusly this worldview that considers others to be little more than nuisances in his path, for were it not for their problems and their being forced upon him he'd be able to walk along this comfortable, predictable path of minimal effort toward his eventual end. Granted his assistance may not always be to the querent's tastes, anything is viewed as a possible solution even that which may be considered amoral without bordering on the psychopathic. But never really approaching either spectrum of the often dichotomal spectra of 'good'; IE if a given solution seems more practical over the 'righteous' approach, he will take it if it'll lead towards resolution. And that basically sums up his character, his life is seen as a series of obstacles that must be routed in the quickest way possible, no matter what. This under-achieving approach applies to everything, no matter whose perception deems it to be important; While not a genius, he can get by with schoolwork without actually studying, and only exerts the bare-minimum effort to accomplish anything, after all success isn't measured by degrees, you either succeed at the task or don't any additional success garnered just exemplifies his point, it's flash, and while it's certainly impressive it requires a conscious expenditure of energy and effort to amount to it, which he doesn't care for.... most of the time. For all his non-chalance and aloofness he's still a teenager, and so is insecure about himself, a blow to his pride may be met with swift retaliation, or an uncharacteristic display of effort by his part to change another's worldview of him. Being the private person that he is, his only companions are his books, which he regards as superior to people in general as books don't need to throw up a facade to function in the normal world, they're open, their contents exposed for any to peer into, to judge and critique to one's reason... it's who he aspires to be in a way. This manifests as a sort of maternal (yes, I know this is strange for a boy) over the things he genuinely cares for, as they're scarce and few they're worth nurturing/protecting in his worldview. His relationship with his parents is good, generally being able to converse with complete frankness, though they've both been absent for a good portion of his life; as such he's grown into the habit of being by himself. He finds the company of others to be a taxing experience, generally noisy and 'fake' as whatever the person wishes to convey is filtered into what they wish to convey. He's without any friends, though he has hangers-on that conform a sizable enough part of his life that he be considered sociable, though he feels no particular kinship to them. That being said, he's deathly afraid of intimacy and was he to find someone open he'd falter in reciprocating this person's honesty, his truths are often filtered through his desire to espouse his weakness in an attempt to push others away, thus his pursuit of truth is self-sabotaged by a fear of truly knowing someone. Riddled with doubt of whether or not he can accept another's true self when he takes issue with his own self. That being said, he has his good points though they rarely come to light, being that he's aware of his own flaws requires a certain sensibility, though it's often dampered by his own twisted sense of worth. Self-imposed exile is not something that's done without learning the sort of weak character that lives within oneself, and thus he feels it's imperative for him to 'earn' the right to be with others... if only it weren't easier to simply be alone for the rest of his natural life. This was met with opposition from the rest of the house of Acharya, who were reasonably displeased that their line would not be continued as intended for generations, save for one person in the bloodline of mendicant monks, and that was Ryou's grandfather. It was not without friction and cutting ties that Ryou's father attained the freedom to pursue his goals, and though the rest of the Acharya would disdain him, he'd always find welcome in the arms of grandfather. Through his grandfather's support, Ryou's father attended an architectural university, earning him the opportunity to travel abroad, as his job netted him one opportunity after the other. It was when working at an esteemed architectural firm that he was sent to survey the building of one of his projects. He travelled to the island nation of Japan, and met his aide de camp a civil engineer by the name of Michiyo Ren. The two worked jointly as they saw Abdal's (Ryou's father) vision come to fruition, their partnership seemed to work in spite of the occassional butting of heads due their distinct career philosophies, but the two seemed to mesh well in spite of these frictions. It wasn't long before the two hit-it-off and entered a relationship, this was mired with difficulties regarding the extended families of the pair; something along the lines of a forced marriage, and Abdal being refused by his own family. The best course of action as determined would be to ellope, and bidding adieu to their bickering relatives, the two entered a happy union, away from all of their familial issues. Though they left on less than pleasant terms with thier families, Abdal could not refuse the kindness offered to him by his own father, and so the family would at times come back to visit the kindly old man. There's little of note throughout his early life, and for Ryou his past is filled with happy memories of his grandfather, the sort of man who lead a life of quiet contemplation and enlightenment towards apotheosis. Though he was too young to understand the duties of mystics, that didn't stop him from partaking in the daily rites of mendicant monks, building the sort of character well suited to the task of life within a monastery. Unfortunately each summer grew shorter and shorter, and with Abdal taking on additional responsibilities, the family required to adjust to Ryou's father's moving domicile. At some point during his natural born life, Ryou's father was selected to work on a massive urbanization project on the artificial island of Tatsumi Port Island, requiring the family to move away once more. This was different however, as they'd need to stay for however long the project could take to be realized. Ryou was understandably saddened by not being able to return to see his grandfather, but soon adapted to life at his now permanent residence. He was constantly assured that they'd be able to visit Grandpa as soon as the project was realized, and clinged to this bit of knowledge, secure that he'd see the man again. However, the project had its share of troubles, and everything seemed to point toward Tatsumi becoming Ryou's permanent residence. The last nail in the coffin arrived in the form of a package addressed to Ryou with no return address, and the only contents within were a string of prayer beads. Ryou immediately understood this as a sign of his Grandfather's passing, grief overcoming him and a long string of relations cut short by his constant moving became his raison d'etre for his jadedness. For someone who's domicile kept changing as per the needs of his father, it meant for him to learn not to establish any lasting relations with those around him, as necessity would no doubt cut these short as soon as another project required Ryou's parents to move. But to sever ties with the only person that'd been so close to him? From that day, Ryou resolved that he'd guard himself to keep from feeling that anguish ever again, pushing everyone away, for he knew the day in which he'd be relocated again would dawn upon him and it would all have been for naught. The boy receded into a sheltered life, his relations only ephemeral, or for the sake of convenience, after all why go through the effort if the end result will be the same? Contrary to this new nature, was his desire to not worry others through his own turmoil, so any effort by his part was relegated to the task of throwing up a facade to attempt normalcy, at least in the eyes of his absent parents all the denying his yearning for companionship. Time has done little to improve his attitude, in fact having embittered him to the point where he seems so blase to the concept of solitude that he seeks it willingly, it is after all better than yearning for a friendship that won't live on. For Ryou this stems from his distrust of others and his own self-banishment from the whole of life. He cannot learn to trust others without allowing people to get closer, but he can't let people close to him because of his taboo, which is there to guard him from yearning and longing for something which he can't have. Also his conformism and aloofness to the extreme, as he could do more with himself but he feels that putting any effort into anything is a pointless exercise, as he can achieve commodity with minimal effort. He can't shine because he doesn't want to, and is devoid of any ambition, truly wasting himself away; this is, of course, another form of self-bondage. PERSONA: Astaroth is something of a controversial figure in mythology, as a male form of a female deity that is then cast-down from divinity, unto the lowly form of a devil in numerous grimoires. In its current form, Astaroth is one of the princes of hell, and is generally depicted as a nude man riding a beast, whilst holding a snake in his hand. He seduces summoners through laziness, vanity and rationalized philosophies (like Ryou's taboo). As he stands, he is in a depowered state, having been stripped of his former authority as the Canaanite godddess Ashtoreth, though through his partnership with Ryou he may guide the latter through travails of the fog in search of his true self... and regain some of his power in the process. Astaroth is a touch different than as portrayed in the Shin Megami Tensei games, though he retains aspects of his original appearance; he is still a big naked man with a weapon, however he seems to have lost his riding beast, and his features are obscured behind a mitre-like mast, he also has a cape as is becoming of a crowned prince of hell, and has dropped his lance in favor of a zweihander, also he's now red.
