Personality:
Tohru Adachi was at one point in time a hardworking student, but upon learning the harsh realities of life he became embittered and is now a lazy and somewhat bumbling police officer. His personality is lackluster in a lot of ways, and there's nothing particularly striking about him. Though he complains endlessly about teenagers, he is not overly mature himself, even hypocritical. He knows that in the real world you can't always get what you want, and yet he is still agitated when he does not get his way.
He likes to have control of a situation, that is when he feels safest, and he can very subtly maintain control most of the time. Adachi obsesses over women almost to the point that he could be considered a stalker, but since he rarely ever actively pursues his feelings, he's really just a creepy semi-perverted guy. He's afraid of rejection, although he would never admit it, and that combined with his immature want to have control can make him dangerous.
He's developed a sort of multiple personalities - rather, they're the same person but radically different in several ways. On the one hand he's goofy lovable Adachi, not perfect by any means, but with pretty good control over his negativity. On the other hand, he's a brooding, nihilistic, world-hating man who doesn't see any problem with doing whatever he wants to get whatever he wants. He's fed up with society, with rules, and with everything and just thinks the world should go straight to hell - wouldn't be that much of a change from the way things already are.
As for what triggers the change, he's unsure at the moment, but he doesn't realize - the nicer side of him doesn't, at least - that his darker side exists, or at least that it is as strong a force as it is. His brooding, evil side, however, seems to be aware of his normal self and delusionally insists that the "normal" him - which in reality is a separate and unaware personality - is a front. So to sum it up, Adachi is indeed a thoroughly messed up individual. Still, he has not killed anyone yet, in accordance with his timeline.
Timeline:
Pre-murders and Pre coming to Inaba. So he at this point is innocent of all charges but with slight psychotic tendencies. He also probably does not yet have a persona. I would like for him to get one, but as for how he gets one, that is yet to be determined.
History:
Adachi grew up in a small town similar to Inaba with his parents. When he got to be in late elementary school he began to resent the town because nothing ever happened there and he didn't have very many friends. Halfway through jr. high his parents divorced, his dad moving away to somewhere else. Although his mom, a sweet woman, did the best she could to raise him during his teenage years, he continuously argued with her, particularly over girls, and at times came to resent her, too.
Before he was in high school, he applied for a high school in Port Island, wanting to ditch his small town life and move on to bigger and better things. He got in, and moved in with some friends of the family. He made acquaintances in high school, but never got close enough to call them friends. Instead, he spent most of his time studying and excelled in school. He had a few girlfriends in high school, and whenever one of them would dump him his bitterness toward women was fueled a little bit.
Adachi attended university in Port Island, as well, continuing to study hard despite not having a clear major. He studied a lot of philosophy and psychology, criminal law, anything that interested him and still found nothing he really wanted to do with his life. Finally, embittered, he decided to join the police force - his reason being so he could legally carry a gun. Despite this somewhat frightening truth, he never really acted dangerously or even suspiciously while he was an officer in Port Island - for the most part just filing paperwork and doing clerk-type duties. After an incident - which in reality was a sexual harassment issue that arose when Adachi came on to one of his female coworkers (it was somewhat blown out of proportion by said female coworker when she reported it) - the Central department thought it would be best for him to transfer.
And so Adachi, just recently, found himself in a small town out in the country, the last place he would ever want to be given his background, working with a partner who treats him - contrary to his experience working on the force - like a rookie. He has very mixed feelings about everything, but in an attempt to make the most of it - and also to avoid being yelled at - is doing his best to solve this case. Little does he realize that the murderer he is chasing after is himself.
